December 2009 - Project management is the X-Factor to IT efficiency
IT organisations can reduce their day-to-day operational costs by investing more into their IT project management, and through greater standardisation of their existing infrastructure, according to a study published by the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
The study, run in partnership between the LSE and Dell, reports that reducing waste and improving efficiencies within IT is a valuable approach for an organisation to release capital for technological innovation. CIOs and IT Directors should worry less about the overall size of their budgets, but how the funds they do have are being allocated. The LSE survey was carried out among CIOs and business leaders in the UK, US, Japan, India, China, France and Germany. The results highlighted that half of executives believed they could save more than 5% of their annual budgets by increasing IT efficiency and reducing waste.
One in three believed technology standardisation would support their organisations to operate more effectively. While 40% thought that improved IT project management would lead to more efficient technology use.
Improved application integration, better IT training and a closer alignment between IT and business objectives were all cited by more than a quarter of respondents as other factors that made IT less effective than it could be. Capital released through efficiency measures would, on the whole, be used to improve customer service levels and the resources available to staff, rather than simply leading to budget cuts, respondents said.
