September 2009 - Contactless Technology - just getting started

Implementation of Point of Sale (POS) Contactless technology has been taking place for some time now and has found significant buy in around the world. The London Metro transit being one of the most notable local examples of a smart card based payment system. Despite this, it is the US that leads the way with significant take up. It seems that although millions of smart cards have been issued in the UK and Europe, the number of merchants configured towards this technology is relatively low. This has led some speculators to comment that the consumer is poised waiting for retailers to adopt this technology.

So what main advantages will drive the switch to RFID based POS?

Quicker transaction times
In the example mentioned at the outset the sheer volume of commuters passing through the gates of the London underground makes a quick transaction time a major benefit - one which retailers could easily take advantage of.

Reduced Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
RFID readers are already competitively priced and because of the nature of the technology there are no motorised moving parts. This has a two-fold advantage providing improved reliability and better resistance to vandalism.

Momentum is building even during this tough economic climate. In August 2009 a high street retailer announced a pilot in 2 stores, and in October another retailer has revealed its plans to pilot a contactless payment system in 6 stores in Liverpool area.
